Cross-Training for Musical Endurance

photo by Photorun.NETLast Sunday you probably couldn’t help but notice the 40,000 runners who took to Chicago's streets for the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon – and included among that number were The Chicago Chamber Musicians’ own Joseph Genualdi, violin, and Gail Williams, horn, as well as Gail’s daughter, Liz.

All three finished, and Gail and Liz raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society. According to all three, it was a fun, safe run, albeit a bit damp.

A regular runner, Gail has run the marathon several times. She was profiled in Runner's World a few years ago, where she stated that the endurance she derives from running makes her a better horn player.

Bravo to all those who undertook the discipline of training for the marathon and braved the crowds and the elements of the day!

Amy,

I would love to hear from the marathoners how this training helps them with their music.  I understand the endurance piece.  Is it also about commitment and discipline?

Thanks for asking about the musician-marathoners and how training crosses over to benefit their music performances.  Gail Williams told me that preparing for the marathon reminded her of the importance of being in shape physically, but it also helped to tune up her mental ability to focus.  You need to be mentally strong to get through a marathon - as you need to have incredible focus and stamina to get through the hour-long, epic, Schubert Octet, which Gail played on CCM's season-opening program in mid-September.  She said she came back from training out west through the summer and was - for the first time - able to sustain long passages in the Octet without stopping to take a breath.  She also likens tapering workouts in the weeks before a big race to the way she advises students to taper their practices before a big recital.
