"If a composer could say what he had to say in words, he would not bother trying to say it in music. " ~ Gustav Mahler

The Grammy-nominated Chicago Chamber Musicians gives musical voice to the life-changing experiences of three great composers in the ensemble's subscription series season finale.  Beethoven's magnificent trio was completed fresh from his first triumphs in Vienna, Schoenberg wrote his explosive work after suffering a near fatal heart attack, and upon Brahms' completion of his Agathe Sextet he wrote, "Here I have freed myself from my last love."

Beethoven: String Trio in C Minor, Op. 9, No. 3
Schoenberg: String Trio, Op. 45
Brahms: String Sextet in G Major, Op. 36 (Agathe)

Ensemble Artists
Joseph Genualdi, violin
Jasmine Lin, violin
Rami Solomonow, viola
Katinka Kleijn, cello
Clancy Newman, cello

Guest Artist
Yukiko Ogura, viola

7:30pm - 9:30pm

Sparks will fly in this evening of musical camaraderie as the virtuoso players of the Music of the Baroque Orchestra take center stage in soloist teams of three. The spirit of the period emerges in constantly changing instrumental textures and colors with Principal Guest Conductor Nicholas Kraemer at the podium for an imaginative program that gives "triple play" a exuberantly baroque twist.

Telemann Concerto for 3 trumpets and timpani

Pachelbel Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and continuo

J. S. Bach Concerto for 3 violins in C Major

J. S. Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major

The Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral Mass. It was completed to mark the first anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist much admired by Verdi. The piece is also sometimes referred to as the “Manzoni Requiem.”  Throughout the work, Verdi uses vigorous rhythms, sublime melodies, and dramatic contrasts – much as he did in his operas – to express the powerful emotions engendered by the text.

Tickets are $12 general admission, $9 for seniors and Northwestern University faculty and staff, and $6 for students.
