Newberry Consort

THE NEWBERRY CONSORT began as part of the Early Music at the Newberry Library series, founded by Mary Springfels in 1982. For over twenty years the Consort has set a high standard for inventive programming with the utmost attention to musical style and historical detail, bringing to light the vast music collections of the Newberry Library. The Newberry Consort is the longest-running and most successful period instrument early music ensemble in the Chicago area. In addition to numerous performances, free public lectures, broadcasts, and outreach events, the Consort is ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Saint Clement Church. David Douglass’s second season as Director promises more of the rich and varied programming for which the Newberry Consort is famous. Entitled Musical Treasures of the Newberry Library, the 2008-09 season focuses on rare gems from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras found in the Library’s own music collections.
