Music Appreciation Class?

Submitted by Guest on Sat, 10/21/2006 - 9:09pm.

I am looking for an adult classical musica appreciation class in Chicago. I don't have a music background, but am seriously involved with a composer and I'd like to have a better understanding of his world and to better appreciate his work. Naturally I am not degree seeking, but am looking for an evening class or some other resource that could give me the basics of what to listen for and what composers/musicians are trying to communicate.

Does anyone know of any class?

Take a look at John Gibbons' classes at the University of Chicago Graham School.  He offers both general and specific (i.e., one composer) classes.  Also, take a look at the NPR Listener's Encyclopedia of Classical Music by Ted Libbey.  It's a book that contains a CD with listening examples.  And, naturally, attend as many concerts as you can!  The program notes are often a wonderful resource.
