The 2008/09 season concludes with a program that includes the world premiere of a new work by Jeremy Flower, the laptop artist who was featured in Osvaldo Golijov’s Ayre and Ainadamar. The concert also features the North American premiere of a new work by Mark-Anthony Turnage for 12 brass players commissioned by MusicNOW, the Berlin Philharmonic, and London’s Barbican Centre. Osvaldo Golijov’s Mariel for cello and marimba, which received its premiere at Carnegie Hall in 1999 was written in memory of the composer’s friend Mariel Stubrin. It evokes the Brazilian music that his friend loved. (The CSO performs the new arrangement of this work for cello and orchestra in October 2008.) Three Roads by Michael Ward-Bergeman, whose work with the hyper-accordion has been featured in numerous compositions by Golijov, is an exploration of three classic poems.
MusicNOW receives funding from a leadership grant from IRVING HARRIS FOUNDATION, Joan W. Harris. Major support is also provided by Cindy Sargent and the late Sally Hands.
