WORLD-RENOWNED CELLO VIRTUOSO
JIAN WANG
TO PERFORM WITH
BELOIT JANESVILLE SYMPHONY

TWO PERFORMANCES ARE HIS FIRST
IN THE UNITED STATES THIS YEAR

Beloit/Janesville, WI – Jian Wang, the highly regarded concert soloist from China, will be performing his first two United States concerts in 2009 with the Beloit Janesville Symphony.

Jian Wang first gained international fame as a ten-year-old child prodigy showcased in the 1981 Academy Award-winning documentary film "From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China."

From his enrollment in the Shanghai Conservatory to studying at Yale and Julliard, Jian Wang has since performed with prestigious symphonies and conductors around the world.  His United States performances have included Carnegie Hall and The White House.

"I join my fellow musicians of the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra in welcoming internationally known cello virtuoso Jian Wang to our stage,” stated BJS Music Director and Conductor Dr. Robert Tomaro.  “It is an honor to host an artist of his high caliber and we are all excited to hear his rendering of the wonderful Lalo Cello Concerto.”

“It has been a long time since I played in Beloit, and I am very much looking forward to coming back after so many years.  I also look forward to working with Maestro Tomaro and my close friend since childhood, BJS Concertmaster Sascha Mandl,” said Jian Wang.

Jian Wang returns to Southern Wisconsin 19 years to the day since he first performed with the Beloit Janesville Symphony.  The extraordinarily talented Chinese musician performed as a 20-year-old in 1990, performing the Dvorak Cello Concerto at Beloit College’s Eaton Chapel.

Wang’s return is in celebration of the Sau-Wing Lam Bow-String Scholarship at the school and the benefactor’s life.  Sau-Wing Lam, a generous Chinese-American businessman, funded the musical education of the young cello player and provided him with his first cello upon his arrival in America.  Jian Wang’s appearance is graciously sponsored by the Nie family of Beloit in honor of Sau-Wing Lam.  Additional support is provided by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Stateline Community Foundation, with media sponsorship from WCLO.

“Mrs. Nie's late brother, Mr. Sau-Wing Lam, was instrumental in providing me the opportunity to come to the United States to study. Without his initiative and hard work, my path to become a musician would have been much longer indeed.  Personally, it is an important occasion for me to play in his memory,” commented Wang.

"We offer our most profound thanks to the Nie family, whose generous support has created this unique opportunity to present Jian Wang to our audience," stated Tomaro.
