The Chicago Chamber Musicians' Composer Perspectives series gives today's leading composers the awesome opportunity to curate a concert of music that inspires them and today's adventerous audiences the chance to hear their minds at work.

Join CCM on February 8 as composer Lee Hyla presents his own works and works by David Rakowski and George Crumb.

Hyla has been described as composing works that “deftly blend expressionistic, complex contemporary atonal idioms with elements of avant-garde jazz, rock and even punk” (The New York Times) and have an “inexhaustible capacity to take a listener utterly by surprise” (The Boston Globe). Hyla’s musical background includes experience as a new music, rock and free improvisational pianist, which help him to excel “at what every composer strives to do: to take the sounds that capture him and fashion them into a distinctive voice” (The New York Times).

Hyla took CCM’s strengths into consideration as he built the program for February 8, selecting some of his own works such as Pre-Pulse Suspended to highlight the exceptional string and brass players within the ensemble. Hyla also selected other composers’ works that give him great inspriration. “I used to listen to George Crumb’s Eleven Echoes of Autumn when growing up. Its beauty and the rich sonic landscape blew my mind.” Other works on this concert include his “entrancing and witty” (The New York Times) work for baritone, piano and tape, Wilson’s Ivory-bill; Warble for flute and piano; and Hyper Blue, composed by friend David Rakowski and chosen for its contrast to the Crumb work.

Featuring CCM artists Larry Combs, clarinet; Dennis Michel, bassoon; Gail Williams, horn; Joseph Genualdi, violin; Jasmine Lin, violin; Rami Solomonow, viola; Peter Lloyd, bass; Michael Mulcahy, conductor.

Guest artists include Mary Stolper, flute; Wagner Campos, bass clarinet; Jeremy Moeller, trombone; Mathias Tacke, violin; Jacob Braun, cello; Kuang-Hao Huang, piano.
