Event Type: Choral

The Art Institute of Chicago presents the program Vision and Belief with Conductor Carmen Helena Tellez and the Indiana University Contemporary Vocal Ensemble (CVE).

Vision and Belief features the American première of Stabat Mater for voices and cellos by internationally renowned Mexican composer Mario Lavista. Born in 1943 in Mexico City, Mr. Lavista’s works have been performed throughout the world.

The program also features the world premiere of arias from the Opera on Mexican baroque poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The piece was written by Chicago-based composer Elbio Barilari. For more information on Mr. Barilari, please visit: http://www.elbiobarilari.com/

The performance includes moreover Francis Poulenc's Figure Humaine, a centerpiece of the 20th C. choral literature. Based on poems by Paul Eluard, it expresses the resistance to tyranny during WWII and a fiercely existential love of freedom.

Carmen Helena Tellez has visited Chicago before with the CVE before when she conducted "Praise"-the imposing oratorio by Ralph Shapey - in collaboration with the Contemporary Chamber Players in 2002.
