Dohnányi - Sextet in C Major, Op. 37
Bartók - String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Sz. 67
Schumann - Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47
In CCM’s season opener, the “region’s premier ensemble” (Chicago Tribune) performs three passionate works spanning a century of Romanticism. Dohnányi took the symphonic textures of a grander work and concentrated them in his Sextet, creating an intimate homage to his stylistic forbearers. In contrast, Bartók — who considered Beethoven among his greatest influences, and whose earliest works were in the late Romantic style — melds the folk tunes of his native Hungary into an entrancing story of devastation and joy in the wake of World War I in his String Quartet No. 2. Schumann’s lush and soulful Piano Quartet, written at the end of his chamber music period, explores his most intimate emotions and exemplifies the most influential aspects of the Romantic style.
Featuring CCM ensemble artists Larry Combs, clarinet; Gail Williams, horn; Joseph Genualdi, violin; Stephen Balderston, principal guest cello; Meng-Chieh Liu, piano.
Guest artist Anthony Devroye, viola, will join the ensemble.
