Spohr: Quintet in C minor, Op. 52
Peter Lieberson: The Coming of Light
Barber: Dover Beach, Op. 3
Dvorák: String Quintet No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 97
The pieces on CCM’s 2010-2011 season finale pay tribute to the personal monuments of each composer. Spohr found great inspiration in the clarinetists of his time – he honors these influential musicians with his virtuosic Quintet. CCM presents a special encore performance of the co-commissioned work, The Coming of Light by Peter Lieberson, which commemorates the centennial of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple and explores the emotions associated with impermanence and love. Barber reflects on lifelong solitude in his elegiac Dover Beach. Dvorák memorializes his time in the Midwest by composing his America String Quintet, intertwining sounds of Native American drumming with Bohemian melodies.
