The best place to buy recordings in Chicago?

Submitted by Guest on Sat, 12/16/2006 - 6:31pm.

I recently moved here from New York and my next order of business is finding the best places to purchase classical recordings. Any opinions out there?

We have this wonderful place in NYC called Academy Records, where one can buy (and sell) used and overstock CDs. Is there anything similar in Chicago?

With the collapse of Tower Records, the best places to buy CDs in Chicago are probably Borders Books and the Virigin Megastore on Michigan Avenue. For used CDs, there are Second Hand Tunes outlets, but I don't know how large a classical selection they have. If you're ever in the Bay Area, check out Amoeba Records, which carries both new and used CDs and has a huge selection. If you can get up to Wisconsin, there's a good chain called Exclusive Company, which has outlets in Madison and Milwaukee, as well as other branches. Hope this helps.
