CD Stores? What's left???

Submitted by Frank DeWald on Wed, 06/20/2007 - 1:21pm.

I have always looked forward to my annual summer visits to Chicago for many reasons, not the least of which was shopping for classical CDs and DVDs at Tower, Virgin, Borders and the Symphony Store.  I've known for a while now that Tower closed all its stores, but I only just learned today that the Virgin Megastore on Michigan Avenue is closing July 14 (prior to my August visit)!

Can anyone suggest other places to purchase classical CDs in the city?  I'm looking primarily for downtown locations, but am willing to hear any suggestions.

An article appeared recently (in "Gramophone," I think) about the rise of small, independent stores that cater to classical music lovers to fill the void created by the disappearance of the big retailers.  Nothing was mentioned about Chicago, but I'm hoping that there is something to fill the void both for residents and visitors!

Help!

I have had wonderful luck with Amazon. Most of my purchases are on Amazon.com. Every once in a while I have found that Amazon.com does not have what I want. In those cases I have purchased things from Amazon in other countries. Once I wanted a rare Les Arts Florrisant Cd that Amazon.com did not have. Well, I asked myself what country is more in love with early and classical music that the U.S. I knew the answer to be Germany. So I tried Amazon.de. Sure enough, the Germans had what I wanted. I had a devil of a time trying to use a website in German when I could neither read or speak it. But, through trial and error I got the CD ordered and it came. The downside is that I now recieve periodic spam from Amazon.de. I also had a wonderful experience with Amazon.ca. When I was in Toronto I saw a complete package of a James Levine set of the complete Ring Cycle on CD advertised in the Toronto newspaper for sale on Amazon for $35 Canadian. I tried to order it on Amazon.com and found the only James Levine Ring Cycle set was around $120. I looked at the newpaper ad again and noted it was AMAZON.CA, not Amazon.com. So I logged onto Amazon.ca and found that they did have the $35 Ring Cycle set for sale. I ordered it and it came. It is the real deal. The quality is fabulous. The recordings are the same as the $120 set. But the packaging is a little simpler. It is packaged in a bunch of paper sleeves for the CDs. It included a wonderful booklet in English plus some other languages. Earlier this summer I went to Sweded for the Stockholm Early Music Festival. After I got home and thought about what I had seen and heard I decided I wanted recordings of the players I had heard. So, I went to Amazon.com and found recordings by three of the European groups I had seen and heard. I was amazed to find these recordings of very rare and small European groups who never travel in the U.S. to have recordings for sale on Amazon.com. So I have come to rely on Amazon..

MusicGiants.com is launching a tremendous collection of classical music this summer, all in high definition. Their sound quality is superior to any other digital format available. I highly recommend it for music afficianados!
