Is anyone here going to write about the death of Karlheinz Stockhausen? Maybe why his music is almost never performed here, despite the prevalence of new-music ensembles? Maybe asserting that his music is reviled by presenters? Someone stir the pot here.

I don't have a lot of experience with the works of Stockhausen - however, after listening to his obit on our local NPR station including some musical examples - I was struck by the fact that his techniques seem to be widely used particularly in modern popular music. I am thinking specifically of his work of various national anthems - slicing and dicing them to create a new work - with a very interesting effect. I look at what is done these days with top 40 radio, and these people are basically doing the same thing with popular music written 20, 30 and 40 years ago - you hear the same hooks in a different context. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing, but I will be looking for Mr. Karlheinz at our local music library to investigate further...
