If anyone has taken Sheldon Marcus' Music Appreciation class at the Latin School before and was disappointed that it was cancelled I wanted to let you know that it is being offered again.
I have taken the class many times and love that it includes a live performance by the Civic Orchestra. Sheldon's knowledge and presentation are amazing. He was a longtime host on the old WNIB Classical radio station and he gives lectures at Ravinia and for the One Score program at the CSO.
By googling around I see that his class is being offered again in Ravenswood and starts on September 8. Here is the link that I found http://www.acmusic.org/appreciation.html
If you are interested or know anyone who would be, I highly recommend this class.

Sheldon Marcus Classical Music Class at National-Louis in Skokie
Tue, 3/16/2010 - 8:51am — AnonymousThe Lifelong Learning Institute at National-Louis University, 5202 Old Orchard Road, Skokie, IL PRESENTS:
The Concerto from Baroque to Modern -
Beethoven, Bartok and Beyond
Sheldon Marcus, Instructor
This class is open to all - no prior musical education is required. As music is an emotional experience, we will all benefit from sharing our emotional responses to the musical examples with our fellow classmates. The class will be presented in a lively interactive manner in which all students, regardless of musical background, are encouraged to share their own responses to the music auditioned. While there is no prior knowledge of music required for this class, students with no training or extensive training in classical music are all welcome.
This spring, we will be focusing on the evolution of the concerto, a work for solo instrument(s) and orchestra, from early to modern times. One of the classes will be a field trip to Orchestra Hall to hear a concert by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago performing works studied in class. A pre-concert lecture will be included to allow us to hear an alternative view of the music. Musical examples will be selected from the compositions of Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Barber and others. Interaction and inquisitiveness are welcomed.
The instructor is Sheldon Marcus, who received his PhD from IIT in Physical Chemistry, hosted a classical music program on WDCB-FM Public Radio in Glen Ellyn, taught classical music for adults at the Latin School of Chicago, was a lecturer in Ravinia Festival’s One Score program, and is currently a visiting lecturer in classical music at Self Help Home in Chicago.
Classes will meet from 10:00 to 12:00 noon on Friday morning beginning on April 16, 2010, and continuing for 8 sessions. The field trip will be on Monday, May 24, 2010, meeting at 6:15 p. m. at Orchestra Hall. Class fees are $50 for LLI members and $150 for non- members. For further information or to register, please contact Institute Program Director Joan Marks at 224-233-2366.
